Understand screening and confirmation before choosing a device
Looking for DOT approved breathalyzers? Start with the exact model and the role it will perform. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) publishes separate lists for alcohol screening devices and evidential breath testing equipment used under 49 CFR Part 40.
DOT approved screening devices
Alcohol Screening Devices (ASDs) are used for the initial alcohol screen. They cannot be used for confirmation tests. DOT permits listed ASDs only where Part 40 provides instructions for their use; listed EBTs can also perform screening.
The screening list includes breath devices and saliva tests, such as Chematics ALCO-SCREEN 02. Listing conditions matter: DOT specifically identifies storage-temperature restrictions for that saliva test. Follow the device instructions and applicable footnotes.
DOT evidential breath testers
Confirmation testing requires a listed EBT with the required capabilities. These include three printed copies of the result, a unique test number, device identification and test time, an air-blank test, an external calibration check, and the ability to distinguish alcohol from acetone at the specified level.
DOT’s list includes Lifeloc FC10, FC10Plus and FC20, as well as Alcovisor Mercury and Jupiter. A model’s presence on the list does not mean every package or configuration is ready for confirmation testing. Verify the complete setup, including printing capability.
